Professor R. James Milgram

In addition to Professor Milgram’s mathematics background which is referenced above, Professor Milgram is an internationally known expert in mathematics curricula at the kindergarten through twelfth grade levels. Professor Milgram, with three other colleagues, revised and rewrote the California Mathematics Standards for the California Board of Education (1997). With Professor Wu at Berkeley, he oversaw the writing and revision the California Mathematics Framework for the California Board of Education (1998). He is also on the Achieve Mathematics Advisory Panel (1999-00) where he wrote national standards for middle school mathematics expectations as well as a national mathematics exam to be administered by the states. He has also advised other states concerning their math standards. In 1999, along with Professors Askey, Klein and Wu, he authored the letter to United States Secretary Riley signed by over two hundred of this country’s leading mathematicians and scientists protesting the “Exemplary Programs list.” Professor Milgram has testified before the U.S. Congress on the failure of mathematics education in this country and published numerous articles on mathematics education.
